The Lewis and Clark Expedition

The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first to cross into what is now the western portion of the United States. The expedition, which was led by Captain Meriweather Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, lasted for more than two years and was meant to establish an American presence in the territory before European countries could claim it.
