Historical Significance

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is one of England’s most historically significant cities, with a proud heritage dating all the way back to Roman times. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the fourteenth century and later became a major coal mining area, but it was the famous River Tyne that brought real wealth and prestige to the city with the development of shipbuilding and ship repair work.
