Death in Service on The Thin Blue Line: 1829-1899

is a powerful and respectful tribute to the officers of the Metropolitan Police who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Drawing on extensive archival research, Paul Beard brings these forgotten stories to life through a compelling blend of historical fact and sensitive narrative reconstruction.

Each account reveals the human reality behind the official record, set against the harsh conditions of early policing in a rapidly growing and often hostile London, where officers patrolled alone and danger was ever-present.

More than a work of history, this book serves as a lasting memorial honouring the courage, sacrifice, and quiet humanity of those who stood between order and chaos.

This volume is the first in a planned series covering deaths in service across the history of the Metropolitan Police.

About the Author

Paul Beard served for thirty years as both a uniformed and detective constable in the Metropolitan Police, from 1976 to 2006.

During his service he faced life-threatening situations on several occasions and received a Commissioner's Commendation for bravery.

He later studied Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh and has written twenty-five stage plays, along with seven books on awareness meditation and a secular, scientific approach to Buddhism.

In 2000 he was publicly nominated Community Constable of the Year for his work in New Addington.

He retired to Western Australia in 2006, where he now lives and writes.
