A baby girl was born to a white mother and a black father. When the little girl was born, her grandmother told her daughter that the baby girl was born with a veil over her face. When the daughter asked the mother what that meant, the grandmother only said that her granddaughter must never have children. The grandmother ran out the room in tears.

The mother and father named the little girl Alzora. Alzora was the baby girl; she had six older brothers and one older sister. The family moved to a small country town named Shiro, Texas.

Alzora was a beautiful little girl with long black hair. She would always be alone in the woods, walking and reciting her poetry to the animals. Alzora's mother would call for her to come home for dinner, but she would not answer.
