Rebecca's Academic Journey
Rebecca is accepted for a PhD program in one of Southern California's universities. Her main research works for her doctorate thesis involve working on two different microorganisms, one with a symbiotic life cycle and the other being a flesh-eating bacteria. She aims to do genetic engineering to produce a new species of living creatures that can convert very cheap organic materials into food, which is essential for humanity's future.
The Mysterious Disease and Its Spread
Tom, who is Rebecca's boyfriend and a fellow student, dies due to a very mysterious new disease that has no cure and is extremely dangerous. No one in the medical community can easily understand the complications associated with this disease. Several months later in Mexico, a similar disease appears and spreads among people with low hygiene. Since the symptoms resemble those that caused Tom's death, Rebecca becomes interested in it. The disease has characteristics similar to Ebola, and authorities name it Xbola, attracting national attention.
US Involvement and Rising Tensions
Similar to Ebola, there are many problems related to this disease, especially because the United States is close to Mexico. Authorities fear that sick people might illegally cross the border and spread the disease. Rebecca, involved in investigating her boyfriend's death, contacts the CDC and conducts epidemiological research. She discovers that weeks after Tom's death, a flight stewardess and a cleaning lady in Atlanta also died from the same deadly, incurable disease.
Public Outbreak and Crisis
The news spreads, leading to a threatening situation in the United States. Several people who purchased food from supermarkets in San Antonio and Houston show symptoms. Minor medical issues cause many to rush to medical centers, disrupting daily life. The FBI investigates and uncovers that the microorganism originated from Rebecca's research. The disease spread through her boyfriend, and if uncontrolled, it could wipe out humanity. Authorities identify and arrest those attempting to smuggle the microorganism out of the country for terrorist purposes, just hours before catastrophe ensues.
The Climax and Rescue
The story reaches its peak when Alex and Rebecca prevent the transfer of the germ after Rebecca is kidnapped by ISIS.
