This selection of over 200 photographs offers a further perspective on the life and times of Thirsk and its surrounding districts, showing how they have changed over the last century and beyond.

Serving the northern part of the fertile Vale of Mowbray, the town has always been the local focus for trade and commerce, sport, entertainment and public and private events.

It is here that photographers have found ready subjects for the camera and profitable material for the picture postcard trade. Here, too, are records of occasions for public celebration, of grimmer days of two world wars, childhood scenes and family life, together with images of work and recreation in the surrounding villages and on outlying farms.

There is much here to touch a chord of nostalgia for residents and visitors alike.
