Summary

Lost, broken, divided, and alone, Catherine Carey must leave her home in Charleston, South Carolina, after a terrible fire destroys everything she knows. She ventures to Saint Louis, where she must live with godparents she does not know and begin a new life.

After stumbling upon a startling surprise in the home of her godparents, she is forced to contemplate her values and sacrifice her beliefs. The very roots of her being are put to the test, and it takes the friendship of a young servant, the love of a farmer boy, and most importantly, the Hand of God to lead her into the light, where she discovers herself.
