This is the true story of how after joining a British Tramp Ship in 1961 in the North of England, Peter travels the world from South America to the Far East and China, the USA to India and Ceylon.

With a crew of characters that might well have come from the pen of fiction, he rides the swells of self-doubt as his innocence is shredded and he gradually becomes a useful member of the crew and a man of the world, even as fate intervenes to get him safely home.
