The book is fictional yet some of it is written from recordings regarding World War II depicting the Holocaust factor of the war.

The main character's personality and survival are credited only to himself and his desire to outlive Hell/Auschwitz.

Themes and Reflection

Joseph's shame after the war brings forth a new light and projects it in a unique direction.

He is basically asking the reader, "What would you have done?" "Am I a Nazi or Not?"
