Plutarch

Plutarch was a man of letters of unlimited curiosity; his overall subject, worked out across innumerable essays, dialogues, letters, speeches, and stories, is nothing less than life itself.

As such, he provides an invaluable glimpse into a full cross-section of the classical world. He is not an original thinker, but he dissects the thought with which he was familiar with humility, care, and intelligence.
