Be Nice

My Friend reached across the table

Be Nice

I heard the words as they tripped from his mouth

Be Nice

I pondered
Why would he say that
I am always nice
Everyone I talk to will tell you
I am Nice

Picking up my injured pride
I huffed off
Down the path of

Be Nice

I mulled over his words
Threw them back and forth
I always try to be nice
Never trying to find fault
In those that pass me by
Always smiling and helping those that come my way

Be Nice

It was sticking in my throat
He was right
I may smile
I may say the right words
But in my secret heart
I judge all that come my way
I don't like their walk
Hate their clothes
And their laugh

There it was
Be Nice

Is not just the outward façade
Shining to the world
Telling them that I was the best
It was the nice that was in my heart
The secret place that only God sees
There I am not nice
I am really just a judgmental old bag.

Be Nice

Yes I will be nice
Not from the outside in
But from the inside out.
