The Lake District

The Lake District is one of Britain’s most popular tourist gems, nestled at the heart of the North West. The villages and mountains have been an inspiration for writers, artists and climbers over the centuries, from Wordsworth and Coleridge, to Beatrix Potter and Ruskin.

Throughout this period the Lakeland villages, including Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick, have grown and developed and the lives of locals have changed as the area has opened up to visitors, aided by the introduction of the railway and motor vehicles.
