Part One (1949)
describes the enigma of a workman, sugarcane chopper, farmer, womanizer, quarrelsome in drunkenness, friend of friends, and fathered nine children.
Part Two (1951)
describes the sorrows and embittered sacrifices of an old lady. She pours out painful tears that break her spirit. She has to deal with her son's departure to the military service. The United States is at war with North Korea and the Puerto Ricans youths residing in the Island are required to comply with the draft.
Part Three (1971)
the heaviness and angst of the old lady continues a few years later. Two of her sons are fighting in a jungle, challenging a fearsome enemy. The tour of duty for each son increases her sorrow arduously.
Part Four (present time)
the smallest of seven children immigrated to New York City. Finding himself alone, he challenges the adversity and breaks barriers of illiteracy. He idolizes the illusion of entering college. He is strongly advised to continue his trade (construction worker). He doesn't have integrity to acknowledge the studies of science and mathematics. He has no training or education. He is determined to make his dream a reality.
