This volume is part of a series on India: History, Economy, and Society. Originally published in 1886, this book presents an account of India and its people, condensed from statistical surveys that initially were 128 volumes and 60,000 pages.

It was further condensed into twelve volumes as the Imperial Gazetteer of India. This single volume captures the essence of the entire series.
