When I was a boy my greatest joy

Was a trip to the stables and corral
To saddle up that little bay pony
That felt so much like my pal

He would nose around my pockets

To see if I brought him a treat
Then I would comb his mane and brush his tail
And clean the dirt from his feet

I would mount up and put him in a gallop

His pleasure he could not hide
He would bow his neck and prance like a steed
To show his equine pride

I felt like he was happy to carry me

While he ran in the wind and the sun
He would get a bucket of oats and a rub down
After an hour of fun

The smell of horses still gives me a thrill

That has not changed in forty years
They are truly Gods most beautiful creatures
And they talk to me with their ears.
