Introduction

This book, part of the Gender Perspectives in Law series, seeks to explore the link between theory and practice in contemporary feminisms. Editors of this book recognize that the focus on theoretical and ideological frameworks must be complemented by a reflection on the political and legal value of concrete practices. Therefore, the aim is to investigate this longstanding and successful interplay between theory and practices from different perspectives and methodological approaches, ranging from empirical legal and political studies to doctrinal contribution compound with national or thematic case studies, historical and comparative assessments, domestic as well as international perspectives, conceptual as well as practical considerations.

This book considers historical aspects of women’s political activism and practices, analyzing what aspects have been particularly relevant in the construction of women’s political action, as well as asking what part of the feminist movements of the past is relevant for contemporary political struggles. Additionally, this book explores contemporary legal manifestations of gender oppression and systems of privilege. The authors also examine emancipatory tendencies in modern law, politics, and culture.
