One of the foremost painters of the Italian High Renaissance, Andrea del Sarto was known as an outstanding fresco decorator, painter of altarpieces, draughtsman and supreme colourist. He produced works of exquisite composition and craftsmanship, which were instrumental in the development of Florentine Mannerism. Although highly regarded during his lifetime, his renown was eclipsed after his untimely death by that of his more famous contemporaries Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael.
