In this fifth novel of the story of David, since his heir is much too young to rule in case of David's death, his army continues to ban him from fighting with his troops. He is already battling depression as a result of the death of his beloved wife, Maacah.
In this frame of mind, estranged from all who would bring him comfort or counsel, David falls into the sin that still blackens his name to this day.
