This textbook was originally published in 1965 and is part one of two, designed for students.

It deals more fully than usual with fundamental matters such as the very concepts of crime and criminology, and especially with the highly complex relationship between crime, the criminal law, and certain burning moral issues of our time.

It also includes several chapters on the methods of research used in criminological and penological investigations.
