What is the meaning of it all? Why does God want His people to be sanctified, or set apart from the norm?

Psalm 23:3 says that God leads us in the paths of righteousness for His names sake.

So anyone associated with Him should always strive to have the highest moral characteristics so that individuals who don't know Him don't associate Him with our moral failures. According to 2 Corinthians 5:18, everything that we do from now on is of God, so yes even our premarital girlfriend/boyfriend relationships.
