It is the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a nobleman of Jewish descent who was accused of an assassination attempt and consequently enslaved by the Romans. Considered to be the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century, it became a best-selling novel in America.

Lewis "Lew" Wallace (1827–1905) was an American lawyer, union general in the American Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory, politician, diplomat, and author.
