Acquisition and collection development

Acquisition and collection development complement each other. It is a paradox to note that the initial problem relating to acquisition of library materials is the lack of clearly stated collection development policies which are recommended for university libraries.

Acquisition involves obtaining books and other materials for a library, documentation centre or archive. Collection development, on the other hand, refers to the process of planning a stock acquisition programme to build a relevant collection to meet the objectives of the service.
